Portland Unveils $2.15 Billion Terminal Renovation

A Traveler's Guide to the Future of PDX

Portland International Airport (PDX) has recently unveiled a major renovation of its main terminal, marking the completion of the first phase of a project that has been in the works for several years. This $2.15 billion renovation is part of the broader "PDX Next" initiative, aimed at doubling the airport's capacity and enhancing the travel experience while maintaining the unique character that makes PDX a favorite among travelers.

A New Era for Travelers at PDX

One of the standout features of the newly renovated terminal is its striking nine-acre wooden roof, made from locally sourced, sustainably harvested timber. The design, crafted by ZGF Architects, is inspired by Oregon's natural beauty, incorporating 72 mature trees and thousands of plants within the terminal. As you make your way through the terminal, you'll notice how the 49 skylights allow natural light to filter through, creating a serene and calming atmosphere, perfect for starting or ending your journey.

Streamlined Travel Experience

For travelers, the most noticeable improvement will be the more efficient and spacious layout. The widened TSA checkpoints are designed to streamline the security process, reducing wait times and making your pre-flight experience more enjoyable. With four new check-in islands, navigating the airport has never been easier. If you arrive early, head to the terminal's mezzanine, where you can relax with expansive views of the airfield and a variety of seating options, including stadium-like risers that are perfect for unwinding before your flight.

Embracing Local Culture

PDX has always been known for its local charm, and the renovation ensures that this character shines through. As you walk through the terminal, take a moment to appreciate the 120-foot-long video walls displaying Northwest-inspired art. If you're looking to enjoy a taste of Portland before your flight, stop by the new outpost of Portland's Loyal Legion pub, featuring 96 local beers on tap — a perfect way to savor the local culture one last time before you depart.

A Community-Driven Project

The renovation involved about 30,000 local workers, with 95% of the labor provided by union members, showcasing the community-driven nature of the project. This investment in local talent not only supports the community but also ensures that PDX remains a true reflection of Portland's values.

What's Next for PDX?

This first phase of the PDX renovation is just the beginning. By 2025, travelers can look forward to even more amenities, including new restaurants, shops, and expanded facilities, ensuring that PDX remains a welcoming and efficient gateway to the Pacific Northwest. Whether you're a frequent flyer or just passing through, the new PDX promises a travel experience that's as unique and vibrant as the city it serves.
