The Best Parks to Visit in Portland, Oregon
Explore the Natural Beauty of the City
Portland's Green Spaces Are Calling
Portland is famous for its green spaces, and one of the best parts of being here is how easy it is to step into nature without leaving the city. From forested trails to historic gardens and lively riverfronts, Portland's parks offer something for everyone. Here are some of the top spots to explore.
Travel tip:
The best way to explore them all is by staying nearby. Book directly with Stay Portland to skip platform fees and get insider recommendations from locals who know the city.
Washington Park
If you only have time for one park, make it Washington Park. This large space west of downtown includes the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Japanese Garden, the International Rose Test Garden, and miles of trails that connect to Forest Park. It is the kind of place where you can spend an entire day.
Stay close and save:
Our Northwest Portland rentals put you minutes from the park.
Forest Park
At over 5,000 acres, Forest Park is one of the largest urban forests in the country. With more than 80 miles of trails, it is a paradise for hikers and trail runners. Popular routes include the Wildwood Trail and the Lower Macleay Trail, which passes by the Stone House, often called the Witch's Castle.
Your trailhead advantage:
Stay Portland units near the West Hills give you quick access to the park.
Laurelhurst Park
Laurelhurst Park is a local favorite in Southeast Portland. Designed by the same firm behind New York's Central Park, it is filled with tall trees, open lawns, and a duck pond. On a sunny day you will find picnics, frisbee games, musicians, and plenty of dogs enjoying the off-leash area.
Walkable stays:
Our eastside rentals are within minutes of Laurelhurst.
Peninsula Park and Rose Garden
For a quieter rose garden than the one at Washington Park, head to Peninsula Park in North Portland. This historic park has Portland's first official rose garden, with symmetrical walking paths and a large fountain at the center. In summer, the roses are in full bloom and the neighborhood atmosphere makes it especially charming.
Summer highlight:
Stay in North Portland and stroll over to Peninsula Park.
Tom McCall Waterfront Park
Stretching along the Willamette River, Waterfront Park is where much of the city gathers for festivals, concerts, and community events. It is home to the Portland Saturday Market and the annual Rose Festival. The riverside trail is popular for biking, walking, and jogging while offering views of the downtown skyline.
Stay smart:
Hotels downtown cost more and give you less. Our apartments nearby are modern, spacious, and affordable.
Mt. Tabor Park
Mt. Tabor Park sits on an extinct volcano and provides some of the best views of Portland. Trails wind through tall trees and the summit is an ideal spot to watch the sunset behind downtown with Mt. Hood in the distance. The historic reservoirs and summer concert series make this park extra special.
Skip the hassle:
Our eastside stays put you right at the base of Mt. Tabor.
Sellwood Riverfront Park
Sellwood Riverfront Park is a great choice if you are visiting with a dog. The park has a large off-leash area and direct access to the river. Families enjoy the wide lawns, picnic areas, and trails that connect to Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge.
Bring your pup:
Stay Portland offers pet-friendly rentals minutes from the park.
Cathedral Park
Located beneath the St. Johns Bridge, Cathedral Park is one of the most photogenic spots in Portland. The soaring arches of the bridge look like a cathedral and provide a dramatic backdrop for photos, weddings, and concerts. With a waterfront location and plenty of green space, it feels like a hidden gem.
Stay for the views:
Our North Portland rentals make it easy to catch golden hour at Cathedral Park.
